PHYSIOTHERAPYPHYSIOTHERAPY

Physiotherapy is one of the most well-known forms of treatment for problems with muscle and joint pain, particularly arthritis. It helps maintain independence through improving your mobility, strength and flexibility. Physiotherapists are health professionals who have an in-depth understanding of the body and movement. They work with the body to identify areas affected by painful issues such as arthritis, and find the best techniques to improve upon movement, general health and wellbeing. Physiotheraphy focuses upon providing advice, guided exercises and support. Physiotherapy is highly recommended to sufferers of arthritis as it can help to effectively reduce pain and increase mobility.

THE TREATMENT

Physiotherapy is a manual therapy and so an assessment will be made consisting of an examination of posture, muscles and possibly the manner in which you walk. Other questions will be asked with regards to daily activities that cause discomfort and pain. A personalised treatment plan will be designed to meet your needs. A number of services may be offered such as massage and manipulation, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, specially designed exercise programs and even relaxation techniques. In extreme case surgery is used. However this is rare for those suffering with arthritis. It is usual to have up to six sessions with a physiotherapist.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Physiotherapy consists of a number of techniques that aim to restore an individuals joints and muscles back to their normal functions. Massages and manipulation, movement and exercise, and even energy base therapies such as hydrotherapy all aim to improve upon pain and the body's functionality by stimulating areas and building strength. Further treatment includes exercises and health and lifestyle counselling to help the patient prevent and deal with the affects of arthritis.

WILL IT HURT?

Discomfort may be caused by joints and muscles being moved beyond what the individual is used to. However this produces an overall positive effect.
